Hydra

Hydra Island - Greece (just over an hour by sea from Athens)

Hydra is unique in that cars and even bicycles are banned and transportation is by boat, donkey or foot.

The island's strictly preserved architecture, spectacular views and clear blue waters have inspired countless writers, artists and film-makers.

Its small town has a good selection of stores, boutiques and amenities, and a lively (and very long...!!) nightlife.

"...approached by sea, Hydra resembles a giant amphitheatre - seemingly empty at first, but then filling up with movement and colour as the details of the waterfront come into view. Bars, shops and restaurants circle the harbour, where people sit and watch the main action in the port from the side and comment on it - like the chorus of an ancient Greek play. White villas rise up the hills around the harbour, like the seats of a theatre, to a backdrop of blue seas and skies..."

"...the town, which clusters about the harbour in the form of an amphitheatre, is immaculate"
 Henry Miller
